'Bridgerton' Has Been Renewed for Season 2 and It'll Be All About This Character

Fans have been yearning for this news for almost a month and now it is official: Bridgerton has been renewed at Netflix. In announcing the renewal in a way that only Bridgerton can do, the show has also revealed which character will be at the central focus of the upcoming second season.

What happened in ‘Bridgerton’ season 1?

The series, which is the first show at Netflix from Shondaland, is created by Chris Van Dusen. It follows Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), the oldest daughter in the Bridgerton family as she makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market.

Daphne and Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), come up with a scheme in order to be tied together on the market. However, the scheme becomes more than that when they actually fall in love with each other and things get increasingly more complicated. After being engaged in a battle of wits for most of the season, they were happy together at the end of the season and even had a child born after a short time jump. Viewers also found out that Anthony Bridgerton (Bailey) had decided to jump on the marriage market, following his sister.

The first season was Dynevor and Page. The series also stars Golda Rosheuvel, Jonathan Bailey, Luke Newton, Claudia Jessie, Nicola Coughlan, Ruby Barker, Sabrina Bartlett, Ruth Gemmell, Adjoa Andoh, Polly Walker, Bessie Carter and Harriet Cains and Julie Andrews as the voice of Lady Whistledown.

Lady Whistledown teases what will be going on in ‘Bridgerton’ season 2

A note provided to members of the press by Netflix, penned by none other than Lady Whistledown herself, teases season 2 of the show:

The ton are abuzz with the latest gossip, and so it is my honor to impart to you:  Bridgerton shall officially return for a second season. I do hope you have stored a bottle of ratafia for this most delightful occasion. The incomparable cast of Bridgerton will return to production in the Spring of 2021. This author has been reliably informed that Lord Anthony Bridgerton intends to dominate the social season.  I will have my pen ready to report on any and all of his romantic activities. However, gentle reader, before you set the comments section alight with requests for more sordid details, know that I am disinclined to report on the particulars at this time.  Patience, after all, is a virtue.”

This lines up for anyone who is familiar with Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series of novels. Each novel focuses on a different Bridgerton character. Page and Dynevor are still expected to be in the mix as major characters but Bailey will be the lead this time. Deadline reports that casting is also underway for the female lead of the second season, who will be Jonathan’s love interest.

It is unclear when the show could premiere due to the production restraints of. the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, so it wouldn’t be surprising if viewers do not see this show again until 2022.
