Ika Wong, who is considered one of the most strategic players, and Demetres Giannitsos, who holds the record for most Head of Household wins, created one of the most dominant showmances in the history of Big Brother Canada. They continued to date after their season and recently returned to the Big Brother house, where they got engaged.
‘Big Brother: Canada’ showmance Ika Wong and Dem Giannitsos are engaged
After starting a romantic relationship during Big Brother Canada 5 (2017), Ontario-based hairstylist Ika Wong (37) and Alberta-based oil field instrument technician Demetres Giannitsos (30) continued dating in the real world.
They started a couple’s YouTube channel, Dem & Ika, in April 2018, and it currently boasts over 357,000 subscribers. Their most-watched video, “What’s It Like Dating a Black (Jamaican) Girl,” has accumulated nearly two million views.
They bought a home together in Dec. 2020 before he proposed to her in March 2022 inside the Big Brother house. Posting pictures of their engagement, including him on one knee in the kitchen, Demetres called himself the “luckiest guy in the world” and admitted he fell in love with her “at first sight.”
Ika made the announcement featuring several pictures of the couple with her showing off her ring, simply captioning it, “I said yes.”
Ika competed on ‘Big Brother: Canada’ twice
In 2014, Ika debuted on Big Brother Canada 2, where she found herself immediately nominated for eviction. However, she unanimously stayed in the house and went on to win Head of Household during Week 3.
Even though her reign didn’t go the way she wanted it to, she became a target due to her bold gameplay, ultimately resulting in her eviction the following week. Before she left, Ika had the option to win $5,000 or give everyone letters from home. Knowing her position in the house, the Ontario native chose the former, iconically shredding their letters.
Many viewers loved the memorable moment, and she became a fan-favorite despite her short stay in the house, resulting in an invite for season 5. She performed much better with more game knowledge, creating solid alliances, and getting into a showmance with one of the best competitors, Demetres Giannistos.
The couple formed a power duo with her manipulative gameplay and his wins to get them to the end of the game. However, the eventual winner and their rival Kevin Martin won a crucial Power of Veto, and he cast his sole vote to evict her in fourth place.
Demetres finished third on ‘Big Brother: Canada’ Season 5
The 30-year-old first competed in Big Brother Canada 5, where he met and aligned with veteran Ika.
A competitive threat, Dem went on to win five Head of Household and two Power of Veto competitions, becoming the first BBCanada houseguest to win seven competitions, first to win five HOHs in one season, and breaking the record for most HOH victories in BBCanada and Big Brother U.S. history.
Despite his physical prowess, he avoided nomination for the most part due to his likable personality and alliance with Ika.
However, once the others figured out their showmance, they became a target, forcing him to win his way to the end. Ultimately, he made it to the final three until Kevin, who again won a sole vote, and cast it to evict his rival. Big Brother Canada airs on Global.
