The Scottish meteorologist has sent more than two decades fronting weather forecasts for the BBC. The 58-year-old started off as a secretarial reserve at the corporation before being trained by The Weather Channel and later the Met Office. Since then she’s endeared herself to fans on the likes of BBC Breakfast, Wimbledon coverage, The One Show and many other programmes.
However, some have suggested there is a challenger to Carol’s reign at the helm of BBC Breakfast.
Owain Wyn Evans, a Welsh broadcaster from Ammanford, is quickly developing a sizeable following online.
Earlier this month, fans tagged the BBC and BBC Breakfast in Twitter posts to demand “more of him, please”.
Other praising remarks claimed it was “worth watching the programme for you” and that they “missed” him when he wasn’t on screen.
The support for Owain and increase of his TV appearances, including on The One Show, indicates he could be a big star for the corporation.
Some have even gone as far as to claim he could be the successor to Carol – others suggest he could be her rival.
Carol has spoken about stepping down from BBC Breakfast a number of times in the past but always maintained she would “never lead” voluntarily.
During a 2018 Radio Times interview, Carol claimed she would “hang on” by her “fingernails” if the BBC “showed me the door”.

She has often described BBC Breakfast as her “dream job” and admitted it didn’t feel like work because she was “with friends all the time”.
Carol claimed the job was the only thing that could make her “get out of bed at 2.45 in the morning”.
In the 2018 Sunday Post article, she added: “If I didn’t, then I couldn’t do that and I would be looking for something else.”
However, Carol has hinted that her time might be running thin.

During an interview with The Sun in 2012, she told the reporter her age a number of times for a rather concerning reason.
Carol said: “Look I know there are thousands of younger girls who will kill for my job.”
She claimed to have been incorrectly labelled as “52, 53 and 51” when she was actually 49 years old.
When asked if she could be “tempted” by her “own travel series” or “a variety show” by the Radio Times, she flatly rejected the idea.
It followed the BBC star coming in 10th place in 2015’s Strictly Come Dancing, during a seven-week stint alongside Pasha Kovalev.
Carol said: “I would never give up the weather on Breakfast.”
Despite regularly professing her love for BBC Breakfast, she has also moaned about the gruelling work schedule.
She revealed that by the time BBC viewers see her on-screen it is already her “mid-morning” as she has been awake for nearly four hours.

The extremely-early morning stars left Carol feeling like she had “permanent jet-lag” and “constantly sleep-deprived”.
To negate this sleep-debt, she “had been known to sleep up to 11 hours on weekends”.
While Carol found fame and an adoring fan base on BBC Breakfast, she revealed being a “weather girl” was never her dream.
Growing up in Morar, Inverness-shire, the daughter of hotelier parents she always had ambitions of starring in one of her favourite TV shows.
The youngster was 12 years old when she first wrote to Blue Peter to ask for a job as a presenter.
To her surprise, a producer wrote back and advised her to get a degree before applying to the show again.
In 2019, Carol told The Times: “I’m very passionate about what I do but I never wanted to become what used to be called a ‘weather girl.’”
She explained there were “eight people” in her class at school and while she was “confident”, she was “definitely a big fish in a very small pond”.
In 1993, Carol “eventually” joined the BBC – when she was around 30 years old – and admitted to feeling like she had gone from a “big fish” to “a minnow”.
She worked as a secretary before moving to several different departments and finally “ended up in weather”.
Carol found the subject “fascinating” especially in Britain because “it changes all the time” and said: “As a nation, we are obsessed with it.”
She noted the “importance of getting information” right, especially when it related to “severe weather”, which she said, “ups the ante”.
Carol continued: “We know how vital that information is to our audiences and how it can impact them.”
