Scarlette Douglas visited the Spanish city of Sucina for the latest instalment of A Place in the Sun to help Tony and Carol find their ideal holiday home. However, the Channel 4 expert had to rethink her approach entirely after the couple’s disappointment reaction to the first property she showed them.
Tony and Carol have been married for 40 years and want to swap the West Midlands for the Spanish sun.
As they approach retirement the couple were hoping to find a place they can enjoy in the winter months.
With a budget of £75,000, Tony and Carol were looking for a traditional, detached property with access to a pool.
However, Scarlette decided to show them a ground floor apartment at the beginning of the search.

The couple were pleased with the apartment’s location but immediately noticed the apartment above them.
As they viewed more of the property, Tony and Carol explained they weren’t happy with the idea of someone moving in above them.
“We started off well but the more we came in the less they liked it,” Scarlette remarked.
Explaining why they didn’t like the property, Carol said: “Firstly, I think apartment with somebody above. I don’t think we want that.”
“The positives,” Tony interjected. “The garden was beautiful, the living room was okay but I think we could do with it being a bit bigger and lighter.”
“It’s liveable,” Carol quipped but Scarlette hit back: “Liveable is not a word I like to hear.
“I like to hear wow or this is amazing so clearly this isn’t blowing you both away.”
“Don’t get me wrong,” Carol added. “It’s not bad but it’s not us.”

“That’s fine we’ve learnt from this property,” the expert said. “We know we will not see any more apartments because that’s not for you both.
“And we like space and light. Let’s go and see if I can find that for you with the second property.”
Talking to the camera, Scarlette added: “While I’m not off to a great start I’ve learned from that mistake.”
The second offering didn’t please the couple either as they explained the space was too small for them.
Scarlette reminded them they needed to compromise if they were going to find a property they wanted within their budget.
In the end, Tony and Carol had an offer accepted on a two-bedroom villa in Sucina.
“It had the wow factor as you walked in,” Tony explained.
After some negotiation, Scarlette was overjoyed to let the couple know they had purchased their dream holiday home.
A Place in the Sun airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 3pm.
