Peter Wright was hoping to cheer up darts fans everywhere after a miserable year with his amazing Grinch outfit at the World Darts Championship on Tuesday night.
The defending world champion got his campaign off to a great start with a comfortable 3-1 win over Steve West at Alexandra Palace.
Snakebite always sports an eye-catching outfit, but this was a unique effort this time round, as he added furry green gloves and a huge red and white scarf to his all-green costume.
Always wanting to put smiles on faces, Snakebite was just trying to cheer everyone up.
‘It’s been a miserable year, cheer up everyone, it’s Christmas!’ Wright told Sky Sports.
‘I’m annoyed I’m not playing before Christmas, I wanted to wear another Christmas outfit.
‘Cheer up everyone, it’s Christmas!’
Wright was not at his best, averaging just 92.6, but it was enough to see off West, who was playing his second game of the night after beating Amit Gilitwala in round one and struggled for consistency throughout the match.
The world champ was using a new set of darts for the match – yet again – but was happy with his fresh arrows.
‘Obviously Steve didn’t play his game like he can,’ said Wright. ‘It’s very difficult playing two games, he’s been here hours before me preparing for his first game. I suppose I got away with it.
‘There was a bit of pressure on!
‘I’m really happy, it was my first ever game with them. Got stuff to work on, doubles to hit, but I’m happy with the way they could go.’
Snakebite revealed that he has been struggling with a rib injury, suggesting that he may have even broken a rib after jumping over a fence!
‘I’ve had a really bad rib here, I think I’ve broken a rib or something, it’s been killing me for about a week so I’m just going to rest, I’m not going to play any darts, I’m happy with the darts, I know I can play darts.
‘Yeah [I’m in pain]. I jumped over a fence and when you’re 50-years-old, you think you’re a youngster, I must have done something.
‘I think it’s just rest, mainly.’
Wright now returns after Christmas against either Gabriel Clemens or the winner of Andy Hamilton and Niko Kurz.
