MARCELO GALLARDO is favourite for the Southampton job.

That's according to bookmakers Sky Bet, who've installed the Argentine coach at 6-1 to replace Nathan Jones at St Mary's.

Gallardo is available as a free agent having left River Plate after a wildly successful eight-year tenure.

The 47-year-old claimed 14 titles during his time with the club, and was awarded South American Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Steven Gerrard is next in the betting market at 8-1 following his departure from Aston Villa in October 2022.

Mauricio Pochettino, Nuno Espirito Santo and Rafa Benitez are all locked together at 10-1, ahead of 12-1 chance Scott Parker.

Domenico Tedesco and Matthias Jaissle are offered at 14-1, while Celtic's Ange Postecoglou and Frank Lampard are priced at 16s.

Jones, 49, is on the brink after another disappointing defeat and a bizarre post-match interview.

Saints were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Brentford on Saturday, which leaves the club rock-bottom of the division and three points adrift from safety.
