Medina Spirit’s status for the Preakness is official

There won’t be a Triple Crown winner this year and it has nothing to do with the results for Medina Spirit’s drug tests.

Rombauer used a late charge to overtake Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit and favorite Midnight Bourbon to comfortably win the 146th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on Saturday. Midnight Bourbon was second and Medina Spirit third. Rombauer came in at 12-1 odds and is trained by Mike McCarthy, who won his debut in Triple Crown race.

The race was run under the backdrop of Medina Spirit having failed a post-Derby drug test after winning the seventh crown for trainer Bob Baffert. There were 21 picograms of the steroid betamethasone found in his blood sample on May 1. Medina Spirit was allowed to race in the Preakness after passing multiple tests leading into Saturday. His Derby win could still be taken away if a second sample also comes back positive, but it will have an effect on a potential quest for a Triple Crown.
