Mason Greenwood has reportedly spoken to Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after attempted rape and assault charges against him were dropped.
Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 after videos and images were posted online, with the club deciding to suspend him on full pay.
The charges against him were dropped last week when 12 witnesses refused to co-operate, and it has emerged that the complainant had wanted to retract her accusations since last April.
United responded to the news by announcing that they would be carrying out an internal investigation to determine their next steps.
In the meantime, Ten Hag has reached out to Greenwood to check on the player’s physical and mental state, and told the 21-year-old he was happy that the charges had been dropped, according to The Sun.

Ten Hag reportedly called Greenwood to check on his physical and mental state
A source told The Sun: ‘Mason has spent a long time with very little — if any — contact from the club. As and when they were in touch, it was never direct and always through a third party. So for the manager to call him was a big step for him and one he really appreciated.
‘The manager enquired how he was feeling physically and mentally and said he was pleased the charges had been dropped.
‘He thought it was the right thing to do to get in touch with Mason.’
Ten Hag has made some major decisions since taking over at Old Trafford last summer, dropping captain Harry Maguire to the bench in his opening weeks at the helm, before giving United the green light to terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract in November.
However, he has reportedly made it clear to Greenwood that it will be the club’s choice as to whether he returns to the first-team squad or not.
‘He (Ten Hag) was clear it will be the club rather than him which will decide if Mason can play for United again,’ the source added.
‘Mason’s spirits were lifted by it. He has been at United since he was six and just wants to get back to playing football for them.
‘He is happiest with a ball at his feet and wants to get his career back on track.
‘But he knows the club has a massive decision to make.’
Greenwood has not played for United since January 2022 after being suspended by the club
Earlier this week, Greenwood made significant changes to his Instagram page as he deleted more than 180 posts, but kept United in his bio.
Greenwood’s player profile remains on United’s club website, as the Red Devils ponder whether to keep him on their books.
He also kept Nike in his bio, despite the major sports brand cutting ties with him last year after the allegations were made.
It is understood that some of United’s female players are ‘deeply uncomfortable’ with the idea of Greenwood returning to the club, which could mean that he has to look for a team elsewhere if he wishes to continue in the game.
Should the Premier League club opt to tear up his contract, Greenwood is believed to be willing to resurrect his career abroad, with the option of playing in China appealing to him.
