    The Case for Weghorst

Erik ten Hag has explained why he picks Wout Weghorst for Man United.

The goal-shy striker has received criticism from fans but the Dutch boss was keen to outline what he did well.

He told United's club website: "He is often in the right position, then he fails [to score], but he keeps going.

"He showed great personality and character [and] not only in this game.

"I think also in this game he could have already [scored] his goal, early on, but he keeps focused, he keeps working and he keeps putting himself in the right positions and finally he got his goal and his reward."

    Saints and Sinners

Manchester United return to Premier League action for the first time tomorrow after their Anfield humiliation.

The club responded in positive fashion on Thursday night as they beat Real Betis 4-1.

But they face another difficult task on Sunday as Southampton come into town.

The Saints are re-energised by new boss Ruben Selles who has led the club to victory at Stamford Bridge and again last week against Leicester.

Could they cause another shock at Old Trafford tomorrow?

    Pell of the Ball

Erik ten Hag has praised Uruguayan hot shot Facundo Pellistri for his brilliant cameo performance in the Europa League.

The 31-year-old impressed against Real Betis on Thursday and was the star behind the fourth goal.

Ten Hag told club media: "He is the example by deserving his position by performance on the training [ground].

"And I said the other day, I did not select him for Liverpool and it was not even totally justified because he was training that well. Now this was his moment to come on because of a longer period he performed in training.

"What impressed me was he came on and, straight [away], showed himself. When they came on, Scott [McTominay] and Pelli, it was 3-1 but 4-1 is huge, to make the extra goal. In the first moment, they did, which was brilliant."

    No Doubt on Wout

Erik ten Hag has come out batting for his striker Wout Weghorst.

The 30-year-old Burnley loanee has come under fire from fans in recent weeks both for his lack of goals and the 'This is Anfield' sign row.

But United manager Ten Hag said: “He has intelligence. He is often in the right position then he fails — but he still keeps going.

"So he showed great personality and character, not only in this game. He could have got his goal early on but he keeps focused, keeps working, keeps putting himself in the right positions and finally he got his reward.”

    The Kane Clause

Tottenham are reportedly willing to give Harry Kane sway over key decision-making at the club in a bid to get him to stay.

The striker's contract is up at the end of next season and Spurs are expected to lose their legendary striker if not this summer than the next.

Kane, who this year became the club's record goalscorer, is set to become included in key decisions over the club's future, according to 90min.

Tottenham are attempting to convince the 29-year-old of his importance to the club – and fend off the likes of Man United and Bayern Munich.

United could sign a new first-choice keeper and are reportedly in "advanced talks" to land striker Goncalo Ramos.

However, United's transfer priority at the end of the season remains a world-class frontman.

He told Man Utd News: “I watch football so much now – I did not watch it much as a footballer – I did not really care.

“Now as someone not playing, I enjoy being an Arsenal fan – I am buying a season ticket next season.

“I am an Arsenal fan but when you play for a club, you are not thinking about Arsenal. Whichever club you are at, that is the team you are riding for.

Prem stars ponder BBC interview boycott

Prem stars could reportedly boycott interviews with BBC before and after matches in solidarity with Gary Lineker.

Match of the Day hosts staged a mutiny tonight after the Beeb yanked Lineker off air over the Nazi tweet row — plunging the flagship show into chaos.

Ian Wright and Alan Shearer walked out in “solidarity” with Lineker, 62, who had compared the Government’s language around its small boats crackdown to that of 1930s Germany.

The BBC was left scrambling to find a panel for the show, as other stars ruled themselves out.

Now Times journalist Henry Winter has claimed that several players could also boycott being interviewed by the broadcaster.

He tweeted: “Football's backlash against @BBC intensifies over its treatment of @GaryLineker. Many @premierleague players keen to show support for ex-pro pundits who step aside from @BBCMOTD. And @PFA will also fully support players who face fines for not completing required broadcast duties.”

Erik ten Hag believes injured midfielder Christian Eriksen could return soon after this month's international break.

That suggests the Dane might be in contention for United's trip to Newcastle on April 2.

Asked if Eriksen may return at around that time, boss Ten Hag said: “I think he will play, definitely.

"But I can’t tell now an expectation, but I think his progress in the rehab is okay.

"It is going according to plan, so definitely we will see him. But not before the international break.”

    Raya and Costa on radar

United are being linked with David Raya and Diogo Costa as Erik ten Hag "can't ignore" keeper David de Gea's kicking problems.

The Red Devils are monitoring other stoppers despite holding talks over extending the contract of top-earner De Gea.

And The Telegraph suggest a summer replacement is a strong possibility.

Boss Ten Hag's main transfer aim will be a new world-class striker.

Tottenham's Harry Kane, Napoli hero Victor Osimhen and Benfica star Goncalo Ramos are rated prime targets in that department.

But Ten Hag has admitted long-serving De Gea – United's top earner – must work on his game.

Martinez says beating Betis 'doesn't say anything'

Defender Lisandro Martinez insists Manchester United's Europa League triumph over Real Betis "doesn't say anything" as they are looking to meet manager Erik ten Hag's "standards".

United destroyed Betis with a score of 4-1 at Old Trafford with goals by Marcus Rashford, Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Wout Weghorst – the visitors temporarily equalised with Leicester loanee Ayoze Perez.

This comes shortly after Sunday's 7-0 mauling to Liverpool, which led to some fiery remarks by Ten Hag accusing his players of dropping their "standards" after a dominant run across all competitions.

Martinez suggested the team took the Dutchman's criticism on board and are now refusing to lose their concentration.

The Red Devils picked up a comfortable lead in the first leg of the Last 16 but the centre-back insists they need to remain focused ahead of a tough return fixture next week in Seville.

Martinez told MUTV: "It was a great result for us, but we have to keep going.

"It doesn't say anything, this result. It's the first leg and when we go to Betis, we have to be ready and focused, especially in their home, they play well and have the support of their people.

"We are happy for this game. I think the energy of the team [lacked], they started to play, and in the second half we changed the passion, the energy and we showed our mentality and we created more chances, then we score."

    Kick-start to reach top Gea

Erik ten Hag says David de Gea still needs to work on his kicking despite the 32-year-old goalkeeper having played over 500 games for Manchester United.

At the Carabao Cup Final he surpassed Peter Schmeichel’s long-standing record with his 181st clean sheet for the club as they ran out 2-0 winners over Newcastle.

But there has long been question marks over his distribution from the back.

They were raised again on Tuesday when he gave the ball away almost leading to a second Real Betis goal.

Speaking after the game Ten Hag said: “From today I can’t ignore it, but I think we have seen many games he did really well.

“We work on that but David is working on that.

“I don’t know what the reason today was. There was a lot of wind, a different ball, probably he had some problems with that, but I know we can deal with it and he will do better Sunday.”

De Gea is still to agree on a new contract with his current United deal running out at the end of the season.

He is the club’s top earner on £375,000 a week but will have to take a cut to £200k if he wants to extend his stay.

In a Harry to sign new striker

Erik ten Hag has made Tottenham talisman Harry Kane his No1 target this summer, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Spurs’ recent disappointments mean another season without silverware is guaranteed for England captain Kane – who has never won a major trophy.

And with his contract up at the end of the 2023/24 season, a departure from his boyhood club seems more likely than ever.

He attempted to leave the club in 2021 but Spurs chief Daniel Levy blocked him from joining Manchester City.

Now, though, the forward has more bargaining power given he is preparing to enter the final 12 months of his contract.

United fans notice Ten Hag message

Manchester United fans are convinced Erik ten Hag wanted his troops to hit Real Betis for seven in their Europa League clash.

The battering of Betis saw the Red Devils start to erase the memory of their embarrassing 7-0 defeat to bitter rivals Liverpool last weekend.

And some of the Old Trafford faithful reckon Dutchman Ten Hag wanted his troops to score seven themselves.

That belief came from footage of Ten Hag holding up three fingers and shouting not long after his side's fourth goal of the night.

    Fan group makes United bid

A fan-led consortium are putting together a bid for Manchester United.

But another bid has reportedly emerged from fan-led group Red Devils United.

CBS reports that the group are "developing" an offer for the club.

They said they want to use "the collective power of Manchester United supporters to regain control of the club that they love."

The bid is believed to be a mix of private investors and fan-funding.

Any fans backing the group are being asked to buy NFTs in return for "membership and some control over decision making."
