He subsequently spent one year as a VAR official, before leaving officiating behind.
Dean, 55, brandished a record 114 red cards during his distinguished career.
But now he is aiming to show fans a different kind of card.
The ex-whistler has teamed up with Railcard to try to save travelling supporters money this season.

Loyal fans go above and beyond by following their respective teams.
And Dean believes that with the Family and Friends Railcard that he is promoting, an adult travelling to a match with a child could save an average of £50 a game.
He said: "Football fans know I gave out my fair share of red cards in my career.
"But this one is less about early baths and instead about helping friends and families get a better deal on their rail tickets.

"Following a football team is a big financial commitment, and that’s why I’m delighted to be working with Railcard.co.uk to promote the fairest red card around, the Family & Friends Railcard.
"Remember to always carry your red card on match day… and you’re off!"
Dean was one of two VAR-only officials in the Premier League last term, alongside Lee Mason.
He did not receive an appointment after February, however, and reached an agreement with PGMOL chief Howard Webb to step down at the end of the campaign.
In addition to his Railcard duties, Dean is also set to embark on a media career.
He has signed up to appear as part of a new-look Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports – providing live analysis on all the big decisions of the day.
The show will be presented by Simon Thomas, after stalwart Jeff Stelling stepped down.
