Golf betting tips and free bets: Three picks for the AT&T Byron Nelson including 22/1 shot eyeing first tour win

SCOTTIE Scheffler is obviously the man to beat this week – and EVERY week at the moment – and after growing up playing windy Texas courses he ticks yet another box as a potential winner.

But come on, the world No 1 can’t win all the time.

And reports of him shooting 64 in a practice round at next week’s USPGA Championship venue, Southern Hills, suggests he may be thinking more about adding a second Major to his brilliant Masters victory.

He faces a stern challenge at McKinney, near Dallas. And Scheffler’s presence means the odds for the rest of the contenders have been pushed out, offering some tempting alternatives.

Tips for Byron Nelson

Hot shot: Dustin Johnson, 22-1

Has not been firing on all cylinders this year, but still managed a top ten at the Players Championship, a run to the semi-finals at the World Match Play, and a share of 12th at the Masters.

A missed cut at Hilton Head was no great surprise, as you wonder what the hell he was doing at a course that favours the short hitters.

Throughout his lean spell the sleeping giant's putting has remained impressive, and his long game should not be a tough fix – and he could easily turn up with an extra spring in his step after finally tying the knot with long time partner Paulina Gretzky.

Mid price: Will Zalatoris, 22-1

OK, his odds are the same as those being offered on DJ winning, but I’m determined to be on Zalatoris when he finally gets that long-overdue first PGA Tour victory.

To say he’s been knocking on the door would be one of the understatements of the century, and he is going to improve on his runner-up finish at last year’s Masters sooner rather than later.

His improved putting when he finished tied fifth at the World Match Play and sixth on his return visit to Augusta is another big plus, and he was also among the birdies when finishing tied fourth with Davis Riley at the Zurich Classic.

Long shot: Patton Kizzire, 80-1

The good old boy from Alabama went onto my list of players to keep an eye on when he finished in the top ten of the Phoenix Open in February despite a slow start. And this looks like the time to put the each way money down.

Kizzire showed a real appetite for the McKinney lay-out with rounds of 63 and 64 on his way to a share of third place in this event a year ago. Another bout of low- scoring looks certain this time.

Kizzire followed up that Phoenix run with solid if unspectacular efforts at Bay  Hill and Sawgrass, and a share of 26th place at Hilton Head was a decent warm-up for a tilt at a much more suitable layout
