Soccer has long been awful with how it approaches the women’s game. From forcing women to play their World Cup on artificial turf, to the pay disparity to ex-FIFA head Sepp Blatter’s repeated misogynistic remarks, soccer has so much room to improve.
Monday’s inaugural presentation of the women’s Ballon d’Or award for top female player in the world was supposed to be a step forward. Instead, it represented another embarrassing moment for soccer.
When the winner, Norway’s Ada Hegerberg, was being interviewed on stage by Martin Solveig, the French DJ asked Hegerberg to twerk.
