That’s a lot of hair oil.
Paige Gozon, 16, has broken through the noise on TikTok and gone viral thanks to her incredibly greasy hair.
“Greasy hair check,” says the North Carolina-based social media sensation in a video set to ABBA’s “Waterloo,” where she displays the oil slick that has accumulated on her scalp after not washing it for eight years. The video has gotten over 590,000 likes — a significant portion of the 3.6 million likes she’s racked up on the social media network.
From January 14, 2012, to January 14, 2020, Gozon refused to clean her locks as an act of rebellion. She proudly includes the fact in her TikTok bio.
“It originally began as a defiance against my parents,” she tells Allure. “They would make me wash my hair every night, and like the naïve 8-year-old I was, I just saw it as any other boring chore I didn’t want to do.”
Over time, though, her avoidance simply became her routine.
“Eventually, that defiance became a habit,” she says. “After a few weeks going unwashed, it basically turned into a game to see how long I could go. After a year, I simply declared it was my lifestyle. I really did embrace it.”

While not shampooing her hair, Gozon would rinse it and apply dry shampoo and baby powder so that her “lifestyle was better concealed.” As a result of not washing, she says her hair grew faster and she avoided split ends — but needed to wash her bedding more frequently, or it would begin to smell.
Before starting at a new boarding school recently — and on the eighth anniversary of not washing her hair — Gozon decided to shampoo her locks again, a decision which deeply upset her.
“It really felt like eight years of fighting and advocating for myself went down the drain with whatever else the wash cleaned out,” she tells the beauty publication. “It was heartbreaking but definitely a step in the right direction.”
