- HBO announced it would return for a second series – but what can fans expect?
The Last Of Us has been hailed by critics as the best video game adaptation of all time – pulling in more than 22 million viewers with its premiere episode.
The first season followed the harrowing journey of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in a post-apocalyptic landscape ravaged by the mutated cordyceps virus – but it came to a dramatic conclusion on Sunday night.
HBO had already announced the hit series had been renewed for a second season, although fans could be left waiting more than two years for new episodes.
But given that the show is based on an immensely popular PlayStation game of the same name, what can viewers expect to see in series two when it finally reaches our screens?

The Last of Us: Part II, initially set in winter, opens with Joel and Tommy failing to return from a patrol before Ellie and girlfriend Dina set out to find them
Ellie vows to exact her revenge on the Abby, the leader of the Washington Liberation Front, after she kills Joel
The Last of Us is set in an alternate United States that has been ravaged by a mutated Cordyceps fungus that turns humans into terrifying creatures and has wiped out most of humanity.
The first series centers on Joel who has been tasked with taking a young girl named Ellie out west in hopes her immunity to the fungus can help create a cure.
The storyline largely followed that of the game created by publisher Naughty Dog with some notable alterations, including the shift in the overall timeline as well as the in-depth exploration of the relationship between lovers Bill and Frank.
But, after the season finale aired on March 12, fans have already started wondering if the next installment will also follow the same storyline.
Here, FEMAIL takes a look at The Last Of Us: Part II video game to see what could be in-store for season two and when fans should expect its release.
What could happen in season two? Game jumps ahead five years after Joel and Ellie’s friendship turns sour
In The Last Of Us: Part II, which picks up five years after the first game concluded, Joel and Ellie are living at his brother Tommy’s settlement in Jackson, Wyoming.
But the duo’s relationship has soured after Ellie found out the truth about what had happened with the Fireflies after she was put on the operating table.
The game, initially set in winter, opens with Joel and Tommy failing to return from a patrol before Ellie and girlfriend Dina set out to find them.
Meanwhile, players are introduced to a new character called Abby when Joel and Tommy save her from an infected horde.

Ellie continues on her quest and comes face-to-face with a series of adversaries but, despite substantial bloodshed, eventually she decides to return empty handed
She lures them back to her hideout and reveals herself to be the leader of a group called the Washington Liberation Front (WLF).
But then things take a turn for the worst when she drops the bombshell that she is the daughter of one of the Firefly surgeons that Joel had killed all those years ago.
Abby wastes no time in shooting Joel in the leg and beats him repeatedly with a golf club.
Ellie arrives during the attack to see Joel face down in a pool of his own blood as Abby delivers a final blow to his head.
The WLF group leader foolishly decided to leave Tommy and Ellie alive as the teenager swears to exact her revenge.
In spring, when the snow has cleared, Tommy decides to head out in pursuit of Abby and her clan – and is quickly followed by Ellie and Dina.
The young couple take refuge in an abandoned theater where they exchange secrets. Ellie reveals that she is immune to the infection and Dina in turn divulges that she is pregnant – having recently split up with her boyfriend.
Nonetheless, Ellie continues on her quest and comes face-to-face with a series of adversaries but, despite substantial bloodshed, eventually she decides to return empty handed.
But Abby, who has lost friends to Ellie during her campaign, has other ideas.
The WLF leader tracks the group down once again and attacks them – shooting Tommy in the eye and brawling with Ellie and Dina – before warning them to leave.
The game fast-forwards once again and we see the pair living together on a farm, taking care of Dina’s child.

The game concludes with Ellie taking a moment of reflection. She picks up Joel’s guitar and strums it a few times before eventually setting it down in the corner and walking off into the sunset
But their newly-found lifestyle does not last long as Ellie, who is haunted by the events of the past, heads out to exact her final revenge – leaving a trail of devastation in her wake.
She eventually returns to the farm to find that Dina has up and left, leaving their home abandoned.

When will season two come out? The next installment has been confirmed by HBO
Earlier this year, HBO confirmed that The Last Of Us had been renewed for a second season.
‘I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey,’ executive producer Neil Druckmann said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
‘The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast and crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two!’
There has not been confirmation of when the next installment might reach our screens, but the network has a habit of making fans wait two years for follow-up series, such as with House of the Dragon and Westworld.
But it has been confirmed that the creators are planning more than one season to cover all the material in The Last of Us: Part II game, which was released on PlayStation 4 in 2020.
In an interview with GQ, Mazin was quizzed over whether the second series would include the entire Part II story, to which he said: ‘No. No way. It’s more than one season.’
Asked further about if this could mean two or three, he added: ‘You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct.’
