'The Bob's Burgers Movie' Directors 'Exploded' Several Times Making the Movie

The Bob’s Burgers Movie came with a lot of stress for the creators. The animated television show is already enough work, but adding a feature film on top of it is a whole other deal. The Bob’s Burgers Movie directors recalled how they “exploded” several times from stress while making the film.

‘The Bob’s Burgers Movie’ had over 2 years of delays

The Bob’s Burgers Movie follows the Belcher family as they continue to try and keep their restaurant business afloat. However, they owe the bank a large sum of money that they must pay back. Otherwise, they risk potentially losing both their business and their home. Meanwhile, the Belcher kids band together to solve a murder mystery beginning with the ruptured water main that creates a sinkhole in front of the restaurant.

The Bob’s Burgers Movie was in development for quite some time. However, they had to tackle the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in a similar fashion to many other productions around the world. Multiple delays pushed the movie for over 2 years, but it’s finally hitting theaters on May 27 for longtime fans and newcomers.

‘The Bob’s Burgers Movie’ directors ‘exploded’ several times while making the movie

Slash Film interviewed The Bob’s Burgers Movie co-writer Nora Smith and directors Loren Bouchard and Bernard Derriman about all things involving the production. The interviewer noted that they were working on the show, the movie, and Central Park. As a result, they couldn’t believe that they didn’t “explode” over the course of all of that work.

However, Bouchard, Smith, and Derriman explained that they “exploded several times.”

“It’s funny because I remember 15 years ago, or whenever it was when they made The Simpsons Movie, I would hear them all the time in interviews saying how hard it was for them to make that movie because they were making the series at the same time,” Derriman said. “And I remember just hearing it, just going like, ‘God, why are they whining about this so much? Just go and hire some more people. You’re in Hollywood, you find some other artists!’”

Derriman continued: “But when it came to, it’s like, ‘Holy s***. Yeah, this is really hard.’ And because you find the best people to work on the show, you want them to be running the show. But it’s hard to get that many talented people. And so to then suddenly take what could be half of them off the show is just not possible. You want all of them. You don’t want the show to suffer. So that was really hard.”

“Plus, as you mentioned, Central Park,” Derriman said. “We have a whole lot of other shows, we had so much going on, and it was the hardest thing, I think, about this whole project.”

Critics are giving positive reviews

However, it seems that all of their work on The Bob’s Burgers Movie paid off. The critics’ score on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer is currently sitting at a “Fresh” 98% approval rating. It’s clear that the general consensus is quite positive, especially among longtime enthusiasts of the show.

The Bob’s Burgers Movie is just another step in the long-running television show franchise. With a strong box office performance, it’s very likely that this won’t be the last time that audiences see even more content coming from the Belcher family.
