Yours for a nice round £2.5million: Striking roundhouse built on the side of 160ft Cornish cliff goes on the market

A striking roundhouse built on the side of 160ft Cornish cliff has gone on the market for £2.5 million.

The property, dubbed Tailings, was built into the rocks above St Austell Bay in Cornwall and has incredible panoramic sea views, hidden away to ensure absolute privacy.

The main living accommodation is located in a three-storey circular-shaped tower.

The cliff, overlooking the fishing village of Mevagissey was originally part of the Harbour Lights Hotel site.

In the early 2000s the hotel was knocked down and replaced with a smart development of flats. Some of the hotel land was used to build three new homes, including Tailings.

Initially the developer decided to keep Tailings for himself before it was acquired by the current owners about seven years ago.

The property named Tailings is cut into the rocks above St Austell Bay in Cornwall

The house, built in 2001, was designed to maximise the breath-taking views, with much of the main living accommodation circular-shaped for a truly panoramic outlook

The property has over 3,000 sq ft of accommodation over three floors

The property has over 3,000 sq ft of accommodation over three floors. The kitchen, breakfast area and utility room are on the lower ground floor of the roundhouse.

On the ground floor is the entrance hall with the circular sitting room taking up the whole of the roundhouse and leading out to a balcony, with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a utility room behind in the rectangular part of the building.

The master bedroom takes up the roundhouse on the first floor with an en suite bathroom and walk-in dressing room. In the rectangular part there is storage space and a large studio room.

Outside it has a series of gravelled and lawned terraces and a sun-deck built into the cliff ideal for admiring the views and watching passing boats and wildlife.

There is a parking area beside one of the houses slightly higher up the hill and then a gated entrance and a pathway down to the house.

The far-reaching views take in part of the south Cornish coastline and out to the Eddystone Lighthouse, which sits nine miles out to sea.

Jack Greenwood, from estate agents Lillicrap Chilcott, said: ‘Tailings is one of the most impressive and beautifully positioned houses you could wish for. It has complete privacy, you’re perched above the water and it is just magical there.

‘The views are obviously exceptional but it’s the feeling of serenity there that really hits you.

‘Can you imagine coming home from a busy day, then as you walk down the path a feeling of calm washes over you? It’s absolute bliss.

‘You can see round the coast to Chapel Point and on a good day you can see out to sea as far as Eddystone Lighthouse.

‘It’s without question one of the best positions in Cornwall.’
