Princess Diana died over 20 years ago. Yet, her spirit and legacy continue to live on in her sons, Prince Harry and Prince William and so many others who adored her. Since the late princess was such a pillar in the royal family framework, there has been a lot of speculation about how she might feel about Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s royal exit.
After two years in the royal fold, the Sussexes left their roles as senior working royals, packed up their young son, Archie, and moved to Santa Barbara to start a new more private, and peaceful life.
Like the Princess of Wales did nearly 40 years before, Meghan had a very hard time adjusting to royal life. She was suddenly thrust on the global stage where she was analyzed and picked apart by the press at every turn. Now, one source says that Princess Diana would have supported Megxit. In fact, she began talking about leaving the U.K. just before her tragic death.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the royal family because of Archie
It was widely known how much the Sussexes were struggling in the royal spotlight. Not only were they constantly hounded by unfounded tabloids, but they were also reportedly met with resistance within the royal family.
According to Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie’s Finding Freedom, anything the Sussexes wanted to do or complete was cast aside in favor of budgets and resources for Prince William and the Cambridge household. In the end, Meghan and Harry decided they’d had enough. In their Megxit announcement, they outlined various reasons for the exit, but it all boiled down to one thing. Prince Harry explained during a leaked phone call,
Sometimes the right decision isn’t always the easy one. And this decision certainly wasn’t the easy one but it was the right decision for our family, the right decision to be able to protect my son.
Princess Diana understood the pressures of royal life
Like Meghan, Princess Diana found life in the royal family intolerable. She spoke openly about how isolated and lonely she felt, even self-harming as a cry for help when she was pregnant with Prince William.
The princess was also floored by the public’s obsession with her. In an effort to shift the conversation, the late princess often took photographers to visit charities. By the time she and Prince Charles separated in 1993, Princess Diana spoke about seeking a more private life.
“Over the next few months, I will be seeking a more suitable way of combining a meaningful public role with, hopefully, a more private life,” she said in 1993 at a benefit lunch for the Headway National Injuries Association via The Standard U.K. When her divorce from the prince was finalized in 1996, she ditched her security detail as well.
Princess Diana was planning to leave the U.K. before her death
Princess Diana was known for her fierce love for her sons. Therefore, she would have likely supported Prince Harry and Megxit. After all, she had plans to leave the U.K. herself.
The month before her death she took her sons on vacation to St Tropez where she gave a mini-interview to the press and paparazzi who had been spying on her the entire time. In his book, Charles — The man who will be King, royal expert Howard Hodgson writes,
She jumped into a small motorboat and made for the media boats stationed some way away. She proceeded to give an “impromptu press conference at sea where she said, ‘My sons are always urging me to live abroad and be less in the public eye. Maybe that is what I should do. I understand I have a role to play but I have to be protective of my boys.’
No one knows what the princess meant by that surprise.
