Man stages fake emergency to propose to nurse girlfriend

A labor of love! New York man stages a VERY elaborate proposal for his nurse girlfriend by getting a pregnant woman to pretend she was giving birth in the street – and he even roped in the FDNY to help with the fake emergency

  • Amy Marshall, a nurse who runs a hospital labor department, has never encountered an unexpected emergency on the street where she could help
  • Her now-fiancé, Mike Matthews, staged one for her this month
  • He had a pregnant friend in disguise pretend to go into labor and arranged for FDNY firefighters to be on the scene
  • That day, he showed Amy a fake screenshot from the Citizen app showing that a woman in labor was a block away, and they rushed to help
  • As Amy offered assistance, Mike got down on one knee behind her
  • The pair were already unofficially engaged and have planned a wedding in Central Park on May 6

A New York City man orchestrated an entire fake ’emergency’ — complete with a firetruck, firefighters, and a woman seemingly going into labor — to create an unforgettable proposal for his bride-to-be.

Mike Matthews told I Love the Upper West Side that his now-fiancée, Amy Marshall, is a nurse who runs the labor department at her hospital — but whereas Mike frequently stumbles upon medical emergencies in Manhattan and can’t do anything to help, Amy, who has valuable skills and knowledge in that arena, has never encountered an unexpected emergency on the street.

So Mike decided to stage one for her, arranging for a pregnant friend to wear a disguise and pretend to go into labor on the street, and also enlisting help from the local FDNY fire station.

Playing to her strengths: Amy Marshall, a nurse who runs a hospital labor department, has never encountered an unexpected emergency on the street where she could help

Elaborate: Her now-fiancé, Mike Matthews, staged one for her in New York City this month

Ta-da! He had a pregnant friend in disguise pretend to go into labor and arranged for FDNY firefighters to be on the scene

Mike and Amy were technically, if unofficially, already engaged and headed to take engagement photos together on April 16.

But while they already have their wedding planned for May 6 in Central park, Mike had yet to formally ask Amy or give her a ring.

‘She was semi-mad at me because who does engagement photos WITHOUT BEING ENGAGED!’ Mike admitted.

But he had a surprise in store.

‘She always walks around New York City, and she’s never had a medical emergency happen on the street, at a restaurant, someone getting hit on their bike, where she has to run up and help them, which she would know what to do,’ Mike told Patch.

‘Whereas I see things and I don’t know what to do. It always blows my mind. Like how has that not happened to you yet? So that was the premise.’

Before the day of their scheduled engagement photoshoot, Mike visited the local NYPD Precinct and FDNY Fire Station to ask if they’d help him stage his proposal.

He explained that he’d asked a pregnant friend disguise her identity and pretend to go into labor in the middle of the street, near where Mike intended to be with Amy that morning.

‘I literally just knocked on the door and explained what I wanted to do,’ he said. ‘One of the FDNY firemen’s mother was a nurse for 30 years so he had a sort of sweet spot for it.’

The NYPD and FDNY both agreed to be there, barring a real emergency that would take priority.

Finally, on April 16, Mike set the scene. He and Amy were waiting to order bagels when Mike pulled out his phone and shows a fake screenshot from the Citizen app, which allows users to track local crime and other safety incidents.

It showed that a woman was in labor just a block away, so Amy and Mike walked over to check it out and see if Amy could offer assistance.

When they got there, their friend was in a ‘panic’ on a bench, surrounded by firefighters. (The NYPD was unable to make it.)

They do! The pair were already unofficially engaged and have planned a wedding in Central Park on May 6

‘I made her think she was delivering a baby in the middle of a street and she still loves me and I love her, so this is going to work out,’ Mike wrote

‘[Amy] went right into nurse mode,’ Mike said. ‘So I’m like, “Okay, she thinks this is real, and she’s going to do this thing, she doesn’t care about her nails, her makeup, anything anymore.”‘

‘My biggest regret was not recording the audio,’ he continued. ‘I mean, there was yelling, screaming, and Amy was about to take [the other woman’s] pants off and deliver this baby! My friend literally had to tell her “not yet!” and that’s when she turned around.’

When Amy turned, Mike was down on one knee, holding up a diamond ring.

In video recorded of the moment, Amy appears to have immediately recognized that the hole thing was a ruse, and strips off her gloves in exasperation.

‘I made her think she was delivering a baby in the middle of a street and she still loves me and I love her, so this is going to work out,’ Mike wrote on Instagram.
