Man spends 4 yrs turning shed into American diner with replica Statue of Liberty

A DIY fan has given his garden shed a snazzy makeover.

Carl Cowpland has spent the last four years transforming the small building into an American-style diner.

Fun features include a jukebox, hot tub, chequered booth, bunting and bar signs – and he even bought a Statue of Liberty figure on eBay.

The 48-year-old from Wigan, was inspired to re-vamp his shed after a trip to Portugal with his wife Adele, 53.

They went to an American diner – and used this experience plus numerous holidays to the US – when coming up with their design.

Carl told the ECHO: "It was a normal bar before with bare walls and the odd picture here and there. We wanted to do something a bit different."

The first thing Carl bought for the diner was a seating area off eBay at a cost of around £200 and it soon "escalated from there."

He continued to find bargains online and from local sellers, including a model of the Statue of Liberty that his colleague picked up from London.

The diner is also kitted out with its own outdoor bar and hot tub, while a pink car themed sofa is propped up against the wall outside which cost between £300-400.

The indoor and outdoor bars are both stocked with a range of different beverages, while signs that read "hotdog", 'hamburgers", "Coca-cola" and "Carl's bar" adorn the walls.

There's also a darts board, jukebox and TV inside to keep Carl and Adele entertained.

While the project has taken a lot of time and effort, it's been worth it.

The couple made the most of the space during lockdown by holding virtual pub nights in there with friends over Zoom.

They're looking forward to spending many more nights in there with friends and family this summer – even if pals say they've got "too much time on their hands"!

He said: "When my friends come around they always say to me 'you've got too much time on your hands.'

"It's been a labour of love really. When I've seen something I've bought it."
