Discount supermarket chain Lidl has unveiled plans to open hundreds of new stores across the nation as part of its plans for expansion. The list includes a whopping 1,168 locations across all regions of the country including 83 in Yorkshire, 66 in Scotland, 83 in central England, 91 in south London and 42 in south-mid Wales.
The locations include high street stores, standalone stores, mixed-use and shopping centre stores as well as sites in retail parks and metropolitan shops in London and around the M25.
The extensive list of locations is only a potential list of sites. Lidl claims only a small number of these sites will be developed and opened as stores, according to The Scottish Sun.
However, Lidl is hoping to have 1,100 stores in the UK by the end of 2025 which would create 4,000 new jobs.
The retail giant’s new shops are required to have both space for parking and easy access for pedestrians. For standalone shops, they’re looking for plots of 1.5 acres and up to four acres for mixed-use sites.
The site should fit 100 dedicated parking spaces and should accommodate 18,000 and 26,500 sq ft.
Members of the public who help find sites for new development could get a finder’s fee of 1.5 percent of the total freehold purchase price, or 10 percent of the first year’s rent for leaseholds.
Last year, Lidl opened 50 new shops and has opened 15 more in the last three months.
The discount chain employs more than 29,500 members of staff and has a whopping 13 distribution centres in England, Scotland and Wales.

Lidl GB chief executive, Ryan McDonnell, said the chain wants to ensure that “every single household” has access to a store.
He continued: “That’s why our focus is firmly on the future as we continue to grow and invest in our infrastructure, while keeping a lookout for more sites and locations across the country.”
Lidl’s main competitor, German discount chain Aldi, also unveiled plans earlier this year to open a further nine shops by the end of the year.
The supermarket chain also plans to expand and is hoping to open branches across the country.
