DEAR DEIDRE: MY colleague is a pathological liar who tells so many porky pies, he’s making me worry he’s a liability at work.
We work together as bouncers at a nightclub. I’m 41 and I’d guess he’s in his late 20s.

He has told us stories like his dad was a famous singer in the Eighties and that he used to be a top athlete but had to retire because of a car crash.
His fantasies are always unconvincing to me.
Other people seem to take what he says at face value, but it’s obvious to me he has no concept of the truth.
In fact, I think he even believes his own tall tales.

None of his lies hurt anyone, but I’m worried.
How can he be trusted in his job if he can’t tell reality from fiction? Maybe he’s got a personality disorder.
DEIDRE SAYS: Some people tell these kinds of lies because they are insecure or have low self-esteem and want to be liked.
Perhaps he’s lonely or wants attention.
If his stories are harmless and he’s otherwise good at his job, maybe just keep your distance.
But if they take a more dangerous turn then you can talk to Acas (acas.org.uk, 0300 123 1100), which advises on workplace issues.
