Dancing and singing in the planetarium
Through Oct. 31. It’s been a long time coming — having been postponed from its planned, March 2020 tour stop — but the exuberant “Voyagers” finally debuted at the University of Colorado Fiske Planetarium this month, bringing its unique take on the cosmos to audiences.
Instead of the usual lectured visuals, creators Sadie Bowman and Ricky Coates’ Matheatre presents a 1970s and ’80s-inspired musical — a fitting tribute to the 1977 launch of the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft, which continue to explore the outer reaches of our celestial neighborhood. Funny ha-ha
Friday-Oct. 30. Roiling debates over free speech in comedy — as with the Dave Chappelle brouhaha — obscure the fact that at any given show, the audience on hand decides what’s funny.
If you’d like to be in one, Dry Dock Brewing’s comedy series is barreling ahead with a pair of worthy shows this month, including Travel Channel “Drinking Made Easy” and “Three Sheets” host Zane Lamprey (Oct. 22, $25-$40), and Tina Friml and Zac Maas for Oct. 30’s Halloween show and costume party ($10). A cute, slothful exhibit
Opens Friday. While it may seem a poorly adapted trait, slowness has its advantages. Families can explore this and other facets of the slow-kingdom as part of Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s new exhibit, “Survival of the Slowest,” which opens Friday, Oct. 22.
Breaking out of its usual non-living creature-features, the museum will allow visitors to meet live animals including a two-toed sloth, a green iguana, a spur-thighed tortoise, a hedgehog and other species that “thrive in a world where large, strong and fast animals are often at the top of the food chain,” organizers said in a press statement. The touring exhibit opens Friday, Oct. 22, and runs 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, except for 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Fridays. 2001 Colorado Blvd. Included with general admission. Toast to ending sexual harassment in brewing
Thursday. Craft beer’s recent reckoning around sexual harassment and assault in the workplace inspired important, solution-oriented action from women and allies in the industry. One way drinkers can help is by supporting organizations that offer prevention training to brewery and bar staff.
The Blue Bench, a Denver nonprofit specializing in sexual violence prevention and survivor support, is one such organization, and since July it has provided Safe Bars training to six businesses in the city. On Oct. 28, Woods Boss Brewing Co. will host a fundraiser for The Blue Bench called Change on Tap, which starts at 5:30 p.m. with a private tasting of a new specialty English brown ale, The Blue Brew, led by cicerone Dev Adams ($75).
Doors then open for general admission ($25) at 6:30 p.m., when attendees can bid at a silent auction, enjoy live music and, of course, enjoy a couple of pints.
