Confronted thief runs towards camera with golf club as pal tries to hot-wire car

Masked thieves brandishing golf clubs were caught trying to steal a car in shocking footage published online.

The trio tried to break into the vehicle, which was parked in a compound, before they were confronted by security staff and members of the public.

Birmingham Live reports the group of three men drove up to the car park before spending several minutes attempting to steal the lime green Ford Focus.

But they failed to get the car to start when they spotted a member of the public filming them through a fence.

The incident happened at 11.20am at the Royal Mail hub, in Warwickshire, on Thursday.

Footage shows a dark-coloured Vauxhall Astra estate pull up outside the compound gates before two men in masks get out, while a third man stays in the driver’s seat.

The pair are then shown leaning in through the window of the Ford Focus, trying to get it started.

One of them then walks towards the camera, waving the golf club around and threatening the member of the public.

He shouts: "Oi, get the f*** out of here."

He then runs back to the car to help his accomplice, shouting: "Move now. Get the f*** out."

A member of the public is then heard shouting "call the police".

The would-be thieves eventually give up trying to hot-wire the car, run back to their getaway vehicle and speed away.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "There was an attempted theft of a Ford Focus in Riversdale Road, Atherstone, at 11.28am on Thursday December 13.

"Two men got out a car and attempted to steal it.

"Anyone with information that could help police with enquiries should call 101.

"Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
