Amazon Alexa and Diet Coke will now help calculate inflation as Hi-Fis are dropped from 'typical' shopping basket

Smart speakers with the aids, such as Amazon Echo and Google Home, have been added to the list of 700 goods used to track prices.

Baking trays and tins are also in thanks to The Great British Bake Off.

Other items being used for the CPIH (Consumer Prices Index including Housing costs) are dog treats, settees, laundry liquids, dinner plates, shop-bought popcorn and peanut butter.

They replace envelopes, dry dog food, three-piece suites, washing powder and crockery sets.

In total 42 changes have been made. Cola has been split into regular and diet to reflect the Sugar Tax.

The Office for National Statistics will use the new list as the main measure of inflation from this month.
