April Fools' Day 2021 LIVE – Best jokes and pranks as they happen… just make sure YOU don't fall for any

DESPITE the fact it rolls around every 12 months – millions of people still fall for April Fools' jokes each year.

And 2021 will be no exception.

After a torrid year we could all do with a bit of a laugh, so The Sun has decided to gather together all the best jokes and pranks we've spotted this April Fools'.

Everybody from celebs to major corporate firms seem to be getting in on the act this year.

And in classic 2021 fashion furious backlash and grovelling apologies are already flying around.

Volkswagen were forced to say sorry this morning after making a joke last night that their US branch had changed its name to VoltsWagen of America in a stunt designed to promote their new electric car.

The prank left many furious, however, as it comes after the Dieselgate scandal in which the car firm cheated world emissions-testing at a cost to the company of more than $30bn – forcing VW to make a grovelling apology.

Thankfully not every joke has backfired so badly.

Sydney Zoo announced they discovered a new snake species today.

They posted a photo of the snake on Facebook, with the caption: "Spotted just behind the zoo, in the Western Sydney Parklands, the unusual snake was photographed by a staff member during their lunch break.

"After analysis by a Reptile Keeper, it was suggested the new species should be called a black-bellied red snaked (Aprilichis Foolius) due to its striking resemblance in appearance to the red-bellied black snake."

But eagle-eyed fans didn't fall for the joke, with one commenting: "An inverted red-bellied black … and just in time for April Fools Day … what are the chances?!!!

Another wrote: "Yup did you put it next to the flying penguin enclosure?"

You could prank your flatmates by pretending to have spotted a mouse in the house.

For this joke, you need to text them and act as though you are scared.

An idea to go with the text would be to place something small and stringy under the fridge to make it look like a tail.

For this prank, you’ll need to wait for someone to text you.

Upon receiving a message from someone you consider to be a good candidate for the joke, respond as though you don’t know them.

For example, you may receive a text from someone asking you to go for a walk (really, what else would you be messaging about these days?)

You can play along with whatever subject matter comes up, acting as though you don’t know them.

Before they get too frustrated, text them saying “April Fools!”

Good Morning Britain viewers slammed the "worst attempt at an April Fools” as they aired a fake Love Island rip off, Dove Island.

Showbiz correspondent Richard Arnold said execs at ITV have "taken the tried and tested formula" of Love Island to help lonely birds "find the one".

It comes after a year of lockdown, where the birds are apparently "lonely".

Speaking on Thursday's GMB, Richard said: "I've got some eggsciting and exclusive announcement to make, following from the success of Love Island, ITV has now commissioned a big new budget reality dating show with a twist.

"Entertainment execs have taken the tried and tested formula to help birds find the one, on the new show dubbed Dove Island.”

German carmaker Volkswagen this week announced in a press release it would change its name in the US to ‘Voltswagen’.

On Tuesday, the carmaker even changed its name on its website and launched a new Voltswagen Twitter handle.

But it all turned out to be a joke – and the company said it did it to draw attention to the launch of its new SUV.

A spokesperson said: "The many positive responses on social media showed that the campaign resonated with consumers.

"At the same time, we realise the announcement rollout upset some people and we are sorry about any confusion this has caused."
