After finally recognising his unhealthy relationship with alcohol, Spencer Matthews has revealed he ditched drinking for the sake of his marriage to Vogue Williams.

The former Made In Chelsea star opened up about the toll his boozing was taking on his relationship with the Irish model and TV presenter – admitting it almost risked tearing them apart.

“There was a really good chance that my wife would have left me if I carried on drinking the way I was drinking,” the 32-year-old reality star explained while speaking on a Tap Into Success webinar for Nicorette.

“For the first time in my life I put her first. Usually the old me would have said, ‘Do you know what? Fine. If you don’t like it then get out.’

“I had this really kind of selfish ‘me before anyone else’ streak before. When I realised I cared more about her than I do perhaps myself, and that I was making her see less in me, that gave me a real burning desire to be better for her, initially.”

Spencer tied the knot with Vogue, 34, in June 2018 in a stunning wedding in the Scottish Highlands, and gave up alcohol soon after. And according to Spenny, the couple, who are parents to Theodore, two, and seven-week-old Gigi, couldn’t be in a better place now.

“I feel like we have the most wonderful relationship,” he continued. “I can hear that she respects my opinion and respects me as an individual, and that is worth its weight in gold to me.

“There are only a few people whose respect I really care about and, when you’ve come from a darkish place with the drink that I did to very rarely making silly mistakes, you feel like your life is a lot easier. It makes more sense.”

Vogue, who fell for her husband when they appeared together on reality show The Jump in 2017, opened up earlier this year about how his binge drinking affected her.

“He was becoming quite difficult to live with. His boozing had gotten out of control,” she confessed. “And he wasn’t the type of person I’d have liked to have been married to.”

As well as staying sober, Spencer, who now runs his own successful alcohol-free drinks brand The Clean Liquor Company, credits fatherhood as a positive influence in his life.

“Kids are wonderful and I’ve always absolutely adored children,” he said. “Vogue is the most wonderful mother, so watching her in action… I feel very fortunate at the moment.

“We’re very lucky to have a little boy and a little girl and [fatherhood] certainly makes you a more rounded individual.”
