Spanish authorities summon Shakira over claims she owes £13 million in taxes

The net has closed in on Shakira as the law has caught up with her over alleged tax fraud – according to reports.

The 42-year-old pop sensation – famous for songs including Hips Don’t Lie and Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) – will face court after prosecutors in Spain accused her of tax dodging.

The Columbian beauty resides in Barcelona with her football playing boyfriend Gerard Pique, with whom she has two children.

Spanish media is claiming Shakira stands accused of failing to pay €14.5 million (£13 million) in taxes – and it is now time for her to face the music.

The issue surrounds the fact that Shakira changed residence from the Bahamas to Spain in 2015 – but prosecutors claim she was already living in Spain between 2012 and 2014.

As a result, the Spanish tax man is looking for taxes that should have been paid for her global income of those years.

Catalan newspaper El Periodico (The Newspaper) states that Judges have agreed to investigate – with Shakira herself expected to appear in court on June 12.

The court case has bee rumbling for some time now – with reports first emerging in January 2017 that her taxes didn’t add up.

While reports that legal action was looming were then issued in February last year.

And the star has also been scrutinised in the past for her involvement in the Paradise Papers scandal.

Spanish lawyer Ezequiel Camerini told El Confidencial (The Confidential) at the time that Shakira’s involvement in the off-shore finances was justified.

He argued: “as an international artist, she had lived in several places in the course of her professional life, acting in total accordance with the laws of all the jurisdictions she resides in.”
