Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, and husband of Queen Elizabeth II, died this morning, Buckingham Palace announced. He was 99 years old.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the palace announced in a statement. “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
The news arrives nearly a month after Prince Philip spent weeks in the hospital and even underwent surgery for a heart condition. He would have turned 100 on June 10.
