Onscreen Kisses That Caused A Lot Of Drama For These Actors

When it comes to the silver screen, nothing beats a good love scene. In fact, some of the most iconic moments in cinema have revolved around love. As Vanity Fair noted in their roundup of some of the most influential modern movie scenes, we’ve got some iconic love scenes, like Titanic‘s “king of the world” scene, the whispered scene at the end of Lost in Translation, and, of course, the love-hate scene in Brokeback Mountain. It’s safe to say that moviegoers love a bit of romance.

However, it may come as a shock to learn that some of your favorite onscreen couples didn’t exactly feel sparks flying off camera. In fact, some of the best-known kiss scenes actually caused a lot of drama behind the scenes. What happens when two exes have to kiss on camera? Or when two actors who hate each other have a love scene to film? Or, even worse, when one actor has a jealous partner who doesn’t want the onscreen kiss to happen at all?

While we love a bit of Hollywood romance, we also love the off-screen drama, too. So, here are some actors whose onscreen kisses caused some behind-the-scenes issues.

Exes Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper had to lock lips in Mamma Mia 2

During the first Mamma Mia! movie, co-stars Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper fell in love while filming in Greece (via The Telegraph). However, when the pair returned for the sequel, things weren’t quite as idyllic, as they’d broken up and moved on. However, they were still playing a couple in the film.

As Seyfried revealed to The Mirror, her real-life husband, Thomas Sadoski, was on set — and things got a little awkward. “I think he has the same kind of issues that I would have if we were hanging out with his ex-girlfriend from long ago,” she said. And as Seyfried confessed to Elle, it was actually hard not to fall back into old habits off screen after reuniting onscreen. “You know, it’s very strange having to not be intimate with someone you’ve had an intimate relationship with,” she explained.

The situation of having to kiss an ex onscreen was also pretty weird for Cooper. He told Attitude (via Evening Standard), “You just have to be delicate with those situations. She’s married now and has a beautiful child.” Sounds like kissing on camera was more than a little complicated for this pair of exes.

Joey King and Jacob Elordi broke up before The Kissing Booth 2 — but still had to play a couple

It seems that sequels can often be awkward for actors who once dated. In The Kissing Booth 2, Joey King and Jacob Elordi reunited as an onscreen couple, after they’d broken up in real life. King opened up about the experience of kissing her ex to Cosmopolitan. “No one’s thinking to themselves, ‘That was easy,’ because it wasn’t,” she said.

She also explained that she was sure fans would overanalyze her intimate scenes with Elordi, but she didn’t let this distract her while filming. As she put it, despite the awkwardness off screen, King was determined to do her job. “Elle Evan needs her Noah Flynn, and whatever that means for my personal life, I’ll do anything to make sure the story of my character who I care about so much is complete,” she shared. Wow, we’re impressed by how professional these two actors were in such an awkward situation!

Selena Gomez kissed Dylan Sprouse on The Suite Life… even though she had a crush on his brother

Even though The Suite Life of Zack & Cody was about a bunch of pre-teens, it turns out, there was a fair amount of drama that went on behind the scenes — especially when it came to the kissing scenes. As Selena Gomez revealed on The Kelly Clarkson Show, she had a huge crush on Cole Sprouse, one of the stars of the show. “I thought we were gonna be together one day,” she said. However, when she finally got to guest star on the show, her character ended up kissing Cole’s twin brother, Dylan Sprouse. Talk about bad luck!

And that’s not all — it turns out the kiss with Dylan was super awkward. “It was my first kiss,” she revealed. She went on, “It was the worst day of my life.” She’d previously gone into more detail in an interview with Tiger Beat, “I actually leaned in to kiss him and I had my eyes closed a little too early and I ended up missing like half of his lip, so it ended up being the most awkward kiss in the world.”

Penn Badgley and Blake Lively broke up during Gossip Girl, making things pretty awkward

Getting together with a co-star is always dangerous — especially on a long-running TV show like Gossip Girl. Things got pretty awkward for Penn Badgley and Blake Lively, who played on-again, off-again couple Dan and Serena on the show. They got together while filming, but broke up before the show ended. As Badgley revealed on Watch What Happens Live, this made for a few very uncomfortable onscreen kisses. When asked what his best onscreen kiss was, Badgley said, “I’ll say it was Blake because we actually had a relationship at the time.” He went on, “And then the worst? Maybe Blake after we broke up.” Yikes. Sounds tricky.

Luckily, the former couple managed to keep things pretty professional at work. As Badgley put it, “We were actually consummately professional, to be honest.” He added, “Anything is complicated in that way, and we handled it.”

Jennifer Lawrence felt extremely guilty kissing Chris Pratt in Passengers

Jennifer Lawrence is somewhat notorious so for being awkward when it comes to onscreen kisses. For instance, on The Graham Norton Show, she confessed to eating smelly foods before kissing her Hunger Games co-stars. However, bad breath was the least of her worries for her kissing scenes with Chris Pratt in Passengers.

In a roundtable interview for The Hollywood Reporter, she opened up about her “first real sex scene” in the film. By the sounds of things, Lawrence was pretty nervous. In fact, she admitted to getting “really, really drunk” to get over her nerves. What made her extra uncomfortable was the fact that Pratt was married to actress Anna Faris at the time. “It was going to be my first time kissing a married man, and guilt is the worst feeling in your stomach,” she said. She went on to explain that while she wanted to make the scene look realistic, she didn’t want to overdo it. Sounds like Lawrence found that scene super weird to film!

Sean Young and Harrison Ford reportedly hated each other while filming Blade Runner

In the 1980s classic Blade Runner, Sean Young was cast opposite Harrison Ford. Unfortunately, the young actress didn’t exactly get along with the Hollywood veteran. In fact, according to NME, the two actors apparently hated each other — so much so that their famous love scene wasn’t exactly easy to film. As production executive Katherine Haber reportedly said, “That was not a love scene, that was a hate scene,” adding, “When he pushes her up against those blinds? Uh! He hated her.” Yikes!

By the sounds of things, Haber was right. In a 2001 interview for Movieline, Young expressed surprise that Ford had reportedly claimed the pair had “very good chemistry.” “I’m in shock,” Young said. “I thought he hated me. And he hated Blade Runner, too.” Wow, whether Ford hated Young or not, it sounds like their intimate scenes definitely caused some drama.

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher were both super nervous to kiss on That '70s Show

Uncomfortable onscreen kisses aren’t always awkward because the stars dislike each other. In fact, sometimes, love scenes can get dramatic because of unspoken feelings. For Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher on That ’70s Show, that’s exactly what happened.

As Kunis revealed to People, her first kiss with Kutcher, who is now her husband, was super nerve-wracking as she had a huge crush on him. “I was like, ‘Oh, he’s so cute, it’s the Calvin Klein model!'” she recalled. “Then I was like, ‘I have to kiss him?’ I was so nervous and uncomfortable,” she went on. Fortunately, Kutcher understood that onscreen kisses could be awkward, so he helped to put her at ease. “He just made jokes and gave me funny little compliments,” Kunis explained.

However, Kutcher was also really nervous for the kiss. “She acted so cool. She seemed as if she’d done it a thousand times. I was the one with the butterflies in my stomach,” he confessed. What a cute story!

Jennifer Aniston and Tate Donovan were breaking up when they played a couple on Friends

Throughout her time on Friends, Jennifer Aniston had plenty of boyfriends. One memorable character was Joshua, whom Rachel meets while working as a personal shopper. As it turns out, Tate Donovan, who played Joshua, had actually been dating Aniston for two years prior to his role on the show. Unfortunately, the pair happened to be going through a breakup during his five-episode stint on the series.

In an interview with Us Weekly, Donovan revealed just how awkward the situation was at the time. “That was tricky to sort of act, and act like we are just meeting each other, and falling in love, or whatever, interested in each other, when we’re sort of breaking up,” he shared (via Cosmopolitan). “That was just tough.” Apparently, things got so bad that the producers had to cut his time on the show — what was supposed to be six episodes — short. “We were like, ‘Hey, can we not keep doing this?'” Donovan recalled.

In an interview with HuffPost Live, Donovan confessed that things got so bad, he even broke down after filming. “I remember just getting back to my dressing room and just weeping,” he said. Wow, that does sound pretty awful!

Zac Efron surprised Ashley Tisdale with a too-passionate smooth on The Suite Life

Selena Gomez isn’t the only one who had an awkward onscreen kiss on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. In an interview with Elle, Ashley Tisdale revealed that kissing Zac Efron on the show was her worst kiss ever. She explained that it was “the worst because I’m so close to him and he’s like my brother.” She went on, “At the time, he was used to acting on like Warner Brothers, which is CW, and we’re on Disney Channel.” So, Efron’s kiss wasn’t exactly kid-friendly — and Tisdale was shocked! “So, he tried kissing me with his tongue, and I was like, ‘Get away from me,’ as I closed my mouth so fast,” Tisdale confessed.

Oops, sounds like Efron didn’t get the memo about how to kiss on the Disney Channel! That must have been an awkward day on set.

Colin Farrell had to kiss Kate Beckinsale in front of her real-life husband in Total Recall

As an actor, not much could be more awkward than kissing a married co-star. But for Colin Farrell, things got extra weird when his co-star’s husband was also the director of the movie! As Farrell explained on Conan, his passionate kissing scene with Kate Beckinsale in Total Recall was pretty uncomfortable since Len Wiseman, Beckinsale’s then-husband (they’ve since divorced), was directing the whole scene.

Farrell described the situation as “moderately uncomfortable.” “Kissing her was a little bit dodgy,” he confessed, “because the director… ours wasn’t kind enough to leave the room, you know, he stayed.” He added, “Being a director you have to watch the scene.” Yikes, it must have been pretty hard for Farrell to get fully into character with his co-star’s husband watching them! Farrell joked, “The one thing he didn’t say is, ‘Colin, I think you should give it more.'” We can’t say we’re surprised!

Hugh Jackman asked his wife if he could kiss Nicole Kidman in Australia

Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman are old friends. Nevertheless, when they starred in the film Australia, Jackman started to feel a little uncomfortable about kissing Kidman. As he explained to the Express, it was a little awkward as Kidman was also very good friends with his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness. In fact, the pair had even been roommates when Kidman was new to Hollywood.

Jackman explained that he had to discuss his kissing scenes with Kidman with his wife before filming them. “Needless to say Deb wasn’t on set when we had our kissing scenes,” he said. “That would have been awkward, but we talked about it.” Apparently, Jackman had been worried that doing the film alongside Kidman would make his wife uncomfortable. Luckily, Jackman and his wife were able to get past any awkwardness. “We both loved the project and created an atmosphere which was safe,” he explained.

When the film eventually came out, Furness actually loved her husband’s intimate scenes. As he told the Daily Record, “This particular kiss that Nicole and I have, we come together so slowly. And my wife turns to me and says, ‘That was great!’ So I go, ‘Phew, that’s good.'”

Kate Winslet didn't really enjoy her kiss with Leonardo DiCaprio in Revolutionary Road

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio became a famous onscreen couple after Titanic. The pair later reunited for Revolutionary Road — and even though they had practice pretending to be in love, this time, filming the intimate scenes was a little more uncomfortable. Why? Well, Winslet’s husband, Sam Mendes, was directing the movie.

As Winslet revealed to the Mirror, this made for some onset drama — but Winslet was the only one who seemed to notice it. “It was more that neither Sam nor Leo seemed the slightest bit bothered,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Is it just me who feels a bit weird about this? You know. My friend. My husband.'” Apparently, Mendes was too focused on the movie to care much about DiCaprio kissing his wife. In one still from the production, Winslet said, you can see her and DiCaprio kissing with Mendes watching in the background. “You can see this look of absolute intensity on his face,” she said, “and I knew all he was thinking about at that moment was the frame of the shot.”

Rumors spread that Janet Jackson wouldn't kiss Tupac in Poetic Justice unless he did this first

In the film Poetic Justice, Janet Jackson and Tupac certainly had plenty of onscreen chemistry. However, rumors spread that the couple did not get along in real life. In fact, Tupac allegedly claimed that Jackson had asked him to take an AIDS test. Q-Tip, who also acted in the film and who had previously dated Jackson in real life, reportedly said on the podcast Drink Champs (via Revolt), “I don’t know what that decision was on her part to be like, ‘He has to get a AIDS test,'” noting, “But she was definitely, ‘Well, if I’m going to kiss with him, he definitely has to.'”

Tupac later spoke about Jackson’s request to MTV, saying, “If I’m gonna do a love scene with her just like somebody else did and they didn’t take a test, I’m not taking a test.” He added, “Not only am I not taking a test, but get out of my trailer!”

Years later, the film’s director, John Singleton, explained that the rumors about the test were simply a publicity stunt. By the sounds of things, the marketing ploy worked, as the film ended up raking in over $12 million.

Brad Pitt reportedly refused to kiss this actress in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Brad Pitt is one of Hollywood’s most sought after leading men. He’s probably kissed dozens of actresses over the course of his career. However, on one project, the actor allegedly refused to kiss a co-star because of his wife. According to a source who spoke to the Express, Pitt was literally on set when he changed his mind about a kissing scene. “Just as the cameras were about to roll, Brad looked at her and said, ‘No — I don’t think so,'” the source said.

Apparently, Pitt’s rumored last-minute decision was related to his marriage with Angelina Jolie. As a friend of Jolie said, “The last thing she wants is for Brad to fall for another of his leading ladies. She’s acutely aware of how they got together — on a movie set.” By the sounds of things, Pitt reportedly knew his wife wouldn’t be too happy to hear about him kissing her for this film.
