Maya Rudolph Has the Best Response to Kamala Harris’s VP Nomination

Now that Joe Biden has chosen Kamala Harris as his running mate, we might be seeing more Maya Rudolph on Saturday Night Live again.

The actress, who is Emmy-nominated for her guest appearances on SNL portraying Harris, reacted to the California senator’s nomination with pure surprise in the middle of an Entertainment Weekly panel. “That’s spicy,” she said of the news, before adding, “Oh shit. Ruh-roh.”

When asked if she’d be reprising her role on the series, Rudolph said, “I love going to the show any excuse I can get…I just didn’t really anticipate traveling during this pandemic, but if there’s anyone who can work it out I’m sure Lorne [Michaels] has some kind of invisible helicopter that can get me there.”

Still reeling from the shock, she added, “I’m as surprised as you are, guys. I don’t know that I’m ready to go right this minute, but it’s so nice to have this nomination be associated with the show because it’s my true love.”

If Rudolph does get more screen time as the VP nominee, it appears Harris would be a good sport about it. A longtime SNL fan, Harris previously told Seth Meyers that she was “a bit overwhelmed” seeing herself portrayed on the show. “I fully intend to make sure that she has eight years of work on SNL,” she added in the October 2019 interview, back when she was still running as a presidential candidate.

Now that she’s back in the race as a VP contender, she has another shot at giving Rudolph eight more years as her onscreen counterpart.
