Golden Globes Establishes Honorary Award For Achievement In Television

We live in a golden age of television — or gilded as FX boss John Landgraf recently remarked — with the volume of production exploding and quality scaling new heights. With television now rivaling film in level of on- and off-screen talent and critical acclaim, the medium and its creators are getting acknowledged by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association with a special honorary award.

At the top of the nominations announcement for the 76th Golden Globe Awards Thursday morning, HFPA President Meher Tatna unveiled that starting with the upcoming 2019 ceremony, there will be a honorary Golden Globe Award given out for career achievements in television. It will be the TV equivalent of the Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award.

While it was established as an award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”, the Cecil B. DeMille Award honorees have been actors, directors, writers and producers who have made a big mark in the film industry. The first recipient whose career achievements have gone way beyond film, crossing over into TV and other media, was Oprah Winfrey this year.

No name for the TV honorary award was given but the HFPA will possibly follow the same path it took with the Cecil B. DeMille honor. It was first presented at the 9th Golden Globe Awards ceremony in 1952 and was named in honor of its first recipient, director DeMille. The first TV lifetime achievement honoree, as well as the 2019 Cecil B. DeMille Award recipient, are expected to be announced soon.
