Dame Deborah James have an update about her health on Lorraine Kelly's ITV show on Thursday, revealing that she has "outlived" the prediction doctors gave when she left hospital last month.
The mother of two was diagnosed with bowel cancer five years ago and in May, she announced the heart-breaking news that she was now receiving end of life care at home.
The glamorous 40-year-old appeared on Lorraine in a pre-recorded video, sporting a vibrant pink wig and a matching hot pink t-shirt to represent the Race for Life colours.
Deborah gave an update on her health and admitted she is “stable” right now and “taking life slowly” at home with her family.
“I am doing ok, I am stable,” she said. “I think stable is a good thing, I’m taking life slowly, not on social media too much and just spending time in the garden with my family.
“It’s a much slower pace of life which is not what I’m used to physically I’m quite tired, but mentally I’m still a campaigner and asking people to check their poo.”
The You, Me and the Big C podcast host has been campaigning for years for more funding for cancer research, and launched her own campaign, the Bowel Babe Fund, as her legacy.
In a matter of hours, the total surpassed £1 million and now the fund has raised over £6 million.
Deborah added: “I’m taking life day by day and I think just continuing to feel blessed to have another day, knowing that my time is living.”
She broke into a smile as she added that the campaigning has kept her going.
“But at the same time if truth be told, I’ve already outlived yet again what I was told when I was sent home from the hospital so I think even I’m a bit surprised," Deborah said. "But I think it’s having that sense of purpose and campaigning and keeping me going.”
Deborah admitted that she is “so proud” of the legacy she will leave with the Bowel Babe Fund, and thanked her supporters for all their kind messages.
“It’s a legacy that I’m so proud to leave behind, when I’m no longer here,” she added. “But for the moment, I’m here, I’m alive and kicking as much as I possibly can and sending my love and thank you for all your kind messages.”
