Stunned throngs flocked to France’s historic Notre Dame cathedral as it burned Monday, posting video, photos and comments as they watched flames consume the site.
Footage showed the blaze engulf the top of the Gothic cathedral — eventually causing the landmark’s famous spire to collapse.
“It’s a total loss nothing can restore that it won’t ever even be close,” one user reacted to a video of the spire collapsing. “No reason to try. So sad.”
Witness Jean Birbaum said a woman appeared hysterical as flames tore through the cathedral and called to others, “They must do something!”
Nearby, a father told his impatient child, “Sorry my son, but it’s not every day Notre Dame is on fire,” according to Birmbaum.
Another bystander shared multiple videos of the inferno, saying, “And it doesn’t calm down.”
“The fire extends to the entire roof,” the user tweeted.
Police in Paris asked spectators to evacuate the area to allow emergency vehicles access.
